I'm Dreaming Of A Sunny Xmas

With Christmas ringing its festive sleigh bells just around the corner our thoughts are laser focused on the season to be jolly. But, whilst we should, as the song suggests, be dreaming of a white Christmas, we wanted to stay on Twiin brand and factor a little sunshine into the mix, not least thanks to the BAH HUMBUG that is omicron - we all need a little joy to lift the spirits right?

For those of us stuck in cold rainy London the idea of Christmas in a hot country is pretty exotic – but for many of the people we work with internationally, celebrating Christmas in summer is just the norm. To find out what Christmas traditions around the world actually like – we asked 3 of our favourite sunny gals, 3 simple questions.

Here’s what they had to say (trigger warning – there’s some talk of seafood and beaches – you’ve been warned…)

What is Christmas in the sun actually like?

"It’s fantastic! It’s the perfect opportunity to dress up in beautiful summer dresses and enjoy the festive season socialising outdoors with glowing skin…and we don’t have to wear ugly jumpers!"

Do you have any sunny Christmas traditions past and present – if so what are they?

“Normally we play finska on the grass while having a BBQ /pool party with the family. Another tradition is prawns, we always have a plate of fresh prawns.”

How are you planning to spend this year’s holidays?

“This year my husband and I are hosting Christmas at our house, with our new puppy Alfie! We will be holding Christmas Eve drinks, then Christmas lunch – big day! Still not sure about New Year’s Eve yet!"

What is Christmas in the sun actually like?

“To me, it’s just normal!  It’s actually weird to be cold as I grew up spending Christmas with my family and then heading to the beach in Guanacaste for New Year’s!  The days at the beach involve sun bathing, surfing, eating loads of fresh seafood and Cerveza Imperial, Costa Rica’s beer!  It’s the hottest time of the year in Costa Rica, sunny and 30C."

Do you have any sunny Christmas traditions past and present?

“ We have so many!  The most known and popular tradition is making Tamales, a corn cooked ‘masa’ with fillings of rice, pork, and vegetables.  These are hard-work and take a long time to cook.  Families usually gather together to make tamales with every member having a different ‘job’.  I remember when I was little me and my cousin had to put the raisins in my grandma’s batch, and she would constantly tell us off as we kept eating them!  It’s a lovely tradition bringing families together.”

How are you planning to spend this year’s holidays?

“ I’m mostly looking forward to being with my family as I haven’t seen them in 18 months due to the pandemic!  Christmas will be just spending quality time with them, cooking, unwrapping presents, and having loads of wine especially with my Dad, can’t wait!!”

What is Christmas in the sun actually like?

It’s amazing! A mix of sun, seafood and family is the perfect Christmas combination.

Do you have and sunny Christmas traditions past and present – if so what are they?

Seafood! Our family loves prawn cocktails with our own homemade sauce, fresh oysters and lobster rolls. It’s a must-have for us! A good playlist. A mix of Christmas songs and fun beats are the perfect soundtrack to our day. An afternoon nap. Always. A new summer dress for Christmas Day.

How are you spending this year’s Holidays?

With my friends and family, soaking up the sun and lots of eating!
