It’s often a challenge to pack perfectly for a trip away, and planning your capsule wardrobe for a summer staycation in the UK can feel like an impossible task. We all know, the weather is nothing if not changeable meaning one day you’ll be in your bikini and the next you’ll be reaching for a cosy sweatshirt! So we thought we’d help out all of our fellow city-dwellers getting ready to rush to the countryside and coast by giving an insight into what we’ll be packing for our UK weekend breaks.
First of all, the most essential item whether you’re home or away or in the sun or overcast is sunscreen. Anytime you’re outdoors you’re constantly being exposed to UV radiation, which can accumulate damage in the skin and lead to internal and external damage later in life. So, even on those rainy days you should definitely be applying SPF. Our favourite is, of course, Aussie label We Are Feel Good Inc whose Signature SPF50+ Cream is broad spectrum, non-greasy and packed with skin nourishing ingredients. If you’re brave enough to take a dip in the British waters then no need to worry, Feel Good’s creams give up to 4 hours water resistance and are Paraben, Oxybenzone, Ocinoxate and PABA free making it completely Reef Safe (which is always important to bare in mind, even lifetimes away from tropical coral reefs!). We’ll be throwing the 200ml bottle in our weekend bag and keeping the 75ml tube in our handbag for easy re-application on the go.
For The Chilly Day
When it comes to what to pack for your holiday in terms of clothing, layering clothes is key! You can never go wrong with some uber-flattering blue denim, our pick being The Charley in Greed - a modern take on a classic 70s silhouette, high rise and wide legged finished with a raw hem. For an easy summer outfit when it’s hot, but not too hot, we’ll be pairing these jeans with the Mademoiselle Tee, a laidback luxury version of a signature basic tee to finish a classic look.
When putting together a holiday packing list it’s always best to turn to those items in your wardrobe which can be styled in many different ways and classic pieces such as a white tee and jeans are perfect for this. If it gets chillier a cute graphic sweatshirt is the perfect addition and can easily be worn dressed up or down by switching out your shoes and accessories. Speaking of accessories, jewellery is a total holiday essential as they’re an easy way to instantly dress up and add interest to any look, whilst also being super easy to pack! With this simple look we’d wear The Barrier Earrings which feature removable and interchangeable fish and coral branch charms inspired by the ocean, perfect for a trip to the seaside. It also goes without saying that we take our Bandolier wherever we go.
For The Heatwave Beach Day
Of course, it’s not always
chilly in the UK and if you’re lucky enough to be travelling during a heatwave then you better have some swimwear close to hand! When we’re trying to catch some sun we’ll be reaching for the Foxy Top
and matching bottoms
, cut to show some skin they’re perfect for those looking for a much needed tan. If something with a bit more coverage is your vibe look no further than SOOT.
- their Rashie Top
is ideal for the ice cold British sea!
When the evening starts to roll in, or just for your stroll to and from the beach, it’s a no brainer to cover up with some denim shorts (The Monty from sustainable denim brand Boyish
are a great, comfortable length) and an oversized hoodie like the Heather Grey Hoodie from Gaia Gaia
which you can easily dress up or down over the course of your trip. Finish the look with a pop of colour and some extra sun protection with the Jax Bucket Hat in Lemonade
, this statement silhouette is uber-cool and will look incredible in your summer wardrobe for years to come. On a rare day of sunshine in the UK you also mustn’t forget a pair of sunglasses The Dipsea from Sunski
are a great SuperLight style made from recycled plastic, a great comfort fit for the whole day. We'll also of course be packing a Mizar & Alcor Blanket
which can be used both as a blanket and towel for an afternoon at the beach! For The Dinner Date
Even on a dinner date or for your girls night, layering is always key for dressing in the UK. For the date night we’re absolutely loving this Benedetta Dress from Staud which is the ultimate effortless piece for comfort dressing whilst still looking super chic thanks to its usual mesh fabric. When the evening chill rolls in once again a sweatshirt is key. If you’re a minimalist packer you can definitely go back to one of the pieces from the previous looks, but we can’t help but include the David Dream Sweatshirt thanks to its ultimate slouchy fit. If we’ve got plans with the girls then the maxi dress is getting swapped out for something more playful with a midi length - The Spin Dress can see you from a casual dinner to a night on the town with ease. For this one, if we had endless packing space, we’d layer over the They Finally Call sweatshirt to add some contrast and lighten up the look.
It’s an easy choice with accessories, for either look we’d reach for the contemporary classic Moon Tote Bag. This silhouette quickly became a best seller after release and is loved for its simplicity which can be worn both with a gown and denim and a simple tee. Comfortable footwear is critical to travelling, so we’re packing The Trekky Sandals and thanking god flats are trendier than ever!
